2 Hypnotised into Submission

We are all aware by now of the extent of damage caused by the recent collapse on Wall Street.

That this could have been allowed to happen beggars belief. Still stranger is the idea that the crash came out of nowhere – that none of the supposed economic experts saw it coming. If we are to accept this, how can anyone be held to account for anything anymore? How is it that nothing is anyone’s fault and no one will take responsibility?

I would argue it was not an accident. To blame a convergence of new and unexpected global pressures is convenient, but ultimately insufficient.

What is important is not so much the crash itself – that is a symptom. What it represents is an underlying series of events and decisions kept hidden from the public eye. These events are all linked as part of an ongoing process, a process which I will call The Game.

The fact is that the Game has been around a very long time – in different forms, but with the same fundamental effect. As one Game ends, another begins. Its most recent incarnation may be found in the consumption bubble which brought about the economic collapse. If we examine this Game, there is much that we can learn about the rules and the impact which they have on our lives.

It can come as no surprise that the boom years ended in bust – for such is the nature of a capitalist economy. When the bust did come, however, the extent to which it threw our financial institutions into disarray came as a shock to us all.

That bubble grew up over decades, fuelled by a public n so used to disposable income and increased purchasing power that they go about their business like sleepwalkers or people in a trance-state. People no longer make purchases out of necessity, but out of impulse or inclination. Sharp marketing campaigns and the easy availability of credit both contribute to the cycle to such an extent that even when the collapse occurred last year people continued to spend as though nothing had happened, only ceasing when there was neither ready money nor credit to be had.

The human animal is not essentially a rational one. If we believe a salesperson to be genuine and likable, we will instinctively gravitate towards whatever he is selling whether we want it or not. Salespeople know this, and have honed their skills as manipulators to entrap us into making large and largely unnecessary purchases.

Being a master manipulator then, is their goal.

One cannot b trained to be a “Player”, it is something to which one is born. Without a natural capability to manipulate others, Players would be left floundering. They all share the common trait of being narcissistic: they are out for themselves, and everyone else is merely incidental.

Manipulators – Players – are born, not made. Their art requires a degree of congruence in presentation that is simply not sustainable for those who are not naturally inclined to manipulate. The defining element in the character profile of a player is narcissism. But they are not merely narcissistic; they are narcissists to their very core.

Despite this extreme form of self-interest, Players are pack-hunters, gravitating towards one another and existing within carefully controlled circles. As soon as a community of Players has grown strong enough, they will take control of their environment and begin to exploit it for personal gain. This is how The Game begins.

Whereas the law of natural selection would suggest that the most talented people rise to the top, the dominance of the Players is achieved specifically at the expense of those who rightly deserve to rule. The Players lay down rules which work to their benefit and no one else’s, but these rules are hidden, and the game appears on the outside to be proceeding fairly. Whatever we may do to stop them, however, the truth is that the Players are always in control.

And they maintain this control through hypnosis.

By hypnosis I do not mean the cheap tricks of magicians and party entertainers, but a deeper, more sinister, and more comprehensive form of brainwashing.

The Game itself is in reality nothing more than a trance induced by the Players and is only sustained by our collective belief in the fabricated reality we are duped into believing. Once we wake up, The Game evaporates and in very short order becomes a vague and distant memory; the way we shake off a nightmare when we rise in the morning.
