One of the greatest models of communication today is NLP. In this article, I’ll give you a few tips and insights about NLP. While not exhaustive in the least, this article will give you a good starting point on your life long discovery and learning of NLP.
What is NLP, and where did it come from? Most people will tell you that NLP is the model of excellence. And the first few people whose “excellence” was modeled were therapists, and so NLP’s first pass at modeling “excellence” was modeling excellent communicators.
One of these fantastic communicators was Milton Erickson, a medical doctor who invented a new form of hypnosis. He would use a covert, or conversational hypnosis instead of the old fashioned, direct method. People would go see him, expecting to sit in a chair while staring at a swinging watch, only to be told some random, off the wall rambling story that would somehow magically cure their problems.
A whole collection of communication strategies was developed from Milton Erickson, and is referred today as the Milton Model. There are plenty of resources online if you’d like to learn more. The most popular applications of the Milton Model are therapy, sales, and believe it or not, seduction.
Another way to describe NLP is an objective description of the human experience. When you see most counselors, if you have any kind of problem, they will try and figure out why you have a certain problem. Mommy was mean to you, etc. But in NLP, they simply ask how you have the problem, and then change your thinking around slightly and get rid of it without worrying about the why.
What is arguably the greatest application of NLP is modeling itself. Just like they modeled Milton Erickson and other great communicators, you can use NLP to model whoever you want, to learn any skill you want. The sky’s the limit. Musicians, artists, architects, any skill you want, you can model the best in the world with NLP, and learn exactly how to get your skills to their level.
