The right ingredients can make or break a flower arrangement, but the right floral supplies can help a florist create some real masterpieces no matter what medium they work in.

Most floral projects start with florist’s foam, though for real flowers wet foam is used (a spongy material specifically designed to hold onto water and keep the flowers in place). This foam comes in some different grades of quality. They all have their different uses, and the softer foam is usually used for more delicate flowers.

There are a couple things you should keep in mind when you use foam. First, you should set the foam just higher than the vase for the arrangement to make it easier to work with. Wedge it in pretty tight so it will stay in place even if water is added.

A good craft saw should also be on your list of necessary floral supplies. This is the easiest way to deal with and shape your foam. If you don’t have a craft saw, however, you can make a kitchen knife or some wire work, but they aren’t the ideal choice. Either way, be prepared to get covered in foam shavings.

What should you do if the arrangement will be in a clear container? Foam isn’t the most attractive of floral supplies. In this case, a metal frog may be a better choice. They are harder to work with, but look much better in a clear container. Then you can fill the rest of the container with fake gemstones or rocks, just be careful not to crush the stems.

A vase is the most common vessel for flowers, but that isn’t your only choice. There are many other floral supplies that you can use for your arrangements, from decorative buckets to parfait glasses to long planter box containers. Really the only barrier here is your imagination. Take a look around your house because not all floral supplies have to be bought from a store.

The most important of floral supplies are, of course, the actual flowers. You can get them wherever you like, be it a grocery store, a gas station, a specialty florists shop, or bought in bulk online. The important part is that you take the time to find flowers that compliment or match each other, are appropriate for the occasion, and are arranged to have the greatest effect.

It’s not easy to pull all these things together and make a great arrangement. Every detail counts when you become a florist. The best thing you can do for yourself is learn about the medium, experiment with you options, and always keep quality floral supplies on hand.
