Running a pub is the dream of many people seeking to give up their day jobs and move into self employment. Whether it is a public house deep in the countryside or lodged in the inner city becoming a pub landlord is an ambition for many folk.
Unfortunately though becoming a landlord and running a pub isn’t just a cast of pulling a pint now and again whilst propping up the bar in the company of friendly locals. Before you take the plunge into becoming a landlord there are a few things to consider. Not the least of which is that it is really very hard work!
Pubs are of course an institution in the UK. Apparently over 25% of people over the age of’ in the Uk visit a pub at least once a week. Many of course also make more than the odd return visit as well. What this means is that there is a massive marketplace. But it also means that there is huge competition and, to make your pub succeed, you have to make it stand out from the crowd.
More people visit a pub because of its atmosphere rather than its choice of beer so creating the right kind of friendly atmosphere for your clientele is a huge challenge. And it is one that successful landlords invariably get right.
As well as pulling good pints, a successful landlord needs to put on the mix of entertainment in his public house. Nine out of 10 British pubs now serve food, making them a bigger draw for people wanting to eat out than restaurants. So a landlord needs to put a n attractive menu together and serve great food while making sure the price of his meals is affordable. This is not easy, but if a landlord is to be successful he must be able to do this.
Next on the list for the publican is to provide entertainment. And that just does not mean the pub’s traditional football, pool and darts team. He needs to be able to lay on live music, quizzes and provide outdoor areas for families and children. Where possible he will also t have the skill to bring in outside sponsorship for certain events. A carefully planned and successful entertainment programme will greatly boost the amount of money pushed across the bar. So anyone seeking to become a pub landlord should consider carefully whether they have the skills to organise all this.
Training is essential for the prospective pub landlord and his staff. The law in the UK states that anyone who wishes to sell alcohol to the public must take and pass a licensed retailing examination and hold a personal alcohol licence.
Training courses are overseen by the British Institute of Innkeeping and can be taken at a number of independent training centres around the UK. Anyone thinking of running a pub must attend, and pass, one of these courses.
