The Essential Balance of Work and Family

Those of you who work and have a family, or even if you aren’t working but are a parent or a partner or both, will understand the challenge of keeping a good balance between our working and family lives. I find this is particularly so when you are a parent who is working and trying to be a parent at the same time.

With our family, we have my husband who works away one week one, then one off. Then there is myself a home business owner. Both of us struggle to keep a happy medium between our work and having quality time with each other and our four young children.

Even when my husband is home, he is constantly constructing or renovating or some other project. It can be like he’s not here even when he is her. To be honest, we both struggle to spend quality time with each other and the children some times. Not to say that we don’t really enjoy time with our kids when we make the time to do something with them that they love to do.

If there is any advice I can offer to anyone in a remotely similar situation, it is make sure you have time designated for work and time for family or partners as well. People need our time as much or more than our business at hand. Spend weekends only doing family activities if possible and save the weekdays for work. Have time at the end or beginning of the work day for some time with your partner and or children.

Whatever your situation, don’t forget to keep business and family on two different ends of the stick and just try to keep both ends of that stick even to each other if possible, so that one does not effect the other. I know it’s really easy to just say that, but it really doesn’t take much more that a bit of planning and thought to keep both sides happy and humming along nicely to have the happy life that you desire.
