The Idea Behind Offset Printing

Many important functions in a business such as maintaining flow of information within the company and marketing the offerings of the company require printing service. Hence, it is important to have some fundamental knowledge of how printing works, especially offset printing, which is one of the most widely employed printing technologies.

Offset printing can generate a large number of prints quickly, which makes it less costlier than other technologies and also more popular. That is why for bulk orders any good printing company would advise you to go for offset printing.

Offset printing uses oil based ink, which does not mix with water. Its so called because in this method, images are not transported directly from the plates to the paper but this is done through rubber blankets as a medium.

The process begins by developing the designs. Previously the images were produced by creating film negatives and were then transmitted to printing plates made of aluminum. However, a modern printing company would now prepare the plates directly by making use of an image setting system. The next step is to transfer the plate on to a cylinder in the right manner. Thereafter water, and then ink, is spread on the image plates. The image gets the ink while the rest of the area receives a thin film of water, which makes sure that the ink does not spread past the images.

The image is then transferred from the plates to the rubber blanket rolled on another cylinder, so that it is reversed. The image is now printed with its correct side looking up by cutting sheets of papers into appropriate size and putting them on a third cylinder.

The job of printing is completed by the printing company by providing the final touches to the printed sheets using staples or glue or in any other way as per the requirements of the client.
